The Michigan poker community was hit with sad news over the weekend as Kevin Oswald passed away on January 18 at the age of 51. While the cause of his death remains unknown, his legacy as a dedicated poker player and cherished member of the community will not be forgotten.

Oswald may not have had a long list of poker accolades, but the one cash listed on his Hendon Mob profile was a standout achievement. In May 2024, he claimed victory in the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) FireKeepers $1,110 Main Event, outlasting a colossal field of 2,717 entries. His triumph earned him an impressive $234,422 and the coveted MSPT title, following a four-way deal at the final table.

“This feels awesome,” Oswald said after his monumental win. “I’ve been coming here for the last three years every May, so this is just an amazing feeling to be able to win it.”

    A Life Beyond Poker

Though his tournament success came later in life, Oswald was no stranger to the game. A heavy equipment operator by profession, he played poker regularly for decades.

“I work a full-time job but have gotten together with a group of people every Friday for the last 20 years, some of us for the last 25 years,” Oswald shared after his MSPT victory.

Oswald’s contributions to poker extended beyond the felt, as he embodied the spirit of camaraderie and passion that define the game.

    Remembering Kevin Oswald

Oswald was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Beatrice Oswald, and is survived by his brothers, Larry (Vicki) and Gene Oswald; his nephew Eric Oswald (Ashley); and nieces, Lacey Shea (Del) and Kayla Kinnee (Dan).

A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Hacker Funeral Parlors in Sandusky, Michigan. A rosary will take place at 12:30 p.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 3:00 p.m. at the same location.

    A Final Tribute

Kevin Oswald’s impact on the poker community and those who knew him will be fondly remembered. His story of persistence, humility, and love for the game serves as an inspiration for all who share his passion.

Rest in peace, Kevin. You will be deeply missed.
