The Reason Behind Phil Hellmuth’s Withdrawal from 2025 WSOP

With an unmatched 17 WSOP bracelets to his name, Phil Hellmuth withdraws from 2025 WSOP Main Event due to the tournament’s grueling structure. However, at 60 years old, the relentless grind of the WSOP Main Event has become too taxing. In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Hellmuth confessed, “It’s just too tough. People always tell me, ‘Phil, you could play seven days in a row.’ Yeah? Try it. Try getting up and playing from noon to midnight for seven days straight—It’s exhausting.”

I am not playing the @WSOP Main Event. It has become an “Endurance contest.”

I truly believe that 80% of the players want changes made to the @WSOP Main Event. 12 hour days, or longer, for 6-7 days in row, is brutal and disproportionately affects older players pic.twitter.com/7K4OcJOZ56

The Poker Community Reacts to Phil Hellmuth Withdrawing from WSOP 2025

Hellmuth’s withdrawal has sparked debate within the poker world. While many sympathize with the physical toll such events take on older players, others argue that endurance is a fundamental aspect of tournament poker. Notably, Phil Hellmuth withdraws from 2025 WSOP Main Event at a time when the tournament field has become more competitive than ever. His last cash in the Main Event was in 2015, which may highlight the increasing challenge of competing in today’s evolving poker landscape.

Phil Hellmuth’s Poker Legacy Beyond the WSOP

Despite skipping the 2025 WSOP Main Event, Hellmuth’s legacy remains intact. With over $30 million in live tournament earnings, he ranks 27th on the all-time money list. His achievements span decades, including victories in both the WSOP and the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) Main Events—making him the only player to win both titles.

Even though he won’t be at the Main Event, Hellmuth isn’t stepping away from the game entirely. In 2024, he partnered with BetRivers as a brand ambassador, reinforcing his role as one of poker’s most influential figures.
