Doug Polk, one of the most recognisable names in the poker world and a three-time WSOP bracelet winner, has once again found himself at the centre of controversy. Known for speaking his mind and challenging industry practices, Polk has taken aim at ClubWPT Gold, a sweepstakes poker site where he serves as an ambassador.

In a recent YouTube video, Doug Polk criticised a new feature that allows players to pay a fee to reveal folded hole cards after a hand concludes. While the site promotes the feature as a tool for transparency, Polk and several other high-profile pros see it differently.

    Why Doug Polk Spoke Out

Doug Polk began his seven-minute video by teasing fans into thinking he was going to defend the feature. Instead, he flipped the script and launched into a sharp critique.

The feature, which charges two to three big blinds depending on the stakes, allows players to uncover folded hole cards. The money collected does not go to other players but directly to the poker site.

Doug Polk did acknowledge one benefit: the potential to catch collusion. By being able to see hole cards after suspicious hands, players can verify whether opponents are working together. Still, he argued that the negatives far outweigh this single advantage.

Pros Call It an “Idiot Tax”

Polk isn’t the only one unhappy. Other poker stars, including Brian Rast, Shaun Deeb, and Matt Berkey, have publicly criticised the feature. Berkey went as far as calling it an “idiot tax,” suggesting it unfairly punishes recreational players.

Polk echoed the same sentiment, claiming that stronger players will likely avoid using it, while weaker players could be lured into spending extra money unnecessarily. He bluntly stated that it would not change the edge between professionals and amateurs, but it would create an additional burden on casual players.

Polk Pushes Back as an Ambassador

Perhaps the most striking part of Polk’s video is his willingness to speak out against the very site he represents. He admitted that it might not sit well with his sponsors, but said he felt compelled to be honest with his community.

“I’m not sure if ambassadors are supposed to speak out against their own sites here, but that’s what we’re going to do today because I don’t like this whatsoever,” Polk said.

He further added that if players dislike the feature, the best response is to “vote with your play” and choose not to participate on the platform.

    What Happens Next?

Polk assured viewers that he would raise the issue internally and push for changes. Whether the site decides to scrap the feature, adjust it, or redirect the fees to players instead of the company remains to be seen.

This is not the first time Polk has made waves as an ambassador. In a recent televised appearance, he wore his ClubWPT Gold patch upside down—another subtle sign of protest that did not go unnoticed by the poker community.

    Conclusion

Doug Polk’s outspoken nature once again places him at the heart of the poker industry debate. While ClubWPT Gold introduced the feature with good intentions, the backlash from ambassadors and professionals highlights how controversial innovations can be in poker.

For now, the poker community waits to see if Polk’s pushback leads to any change.
